i have 2 old Sony cd autochangers, with a modem to connect them. My sony head unit is broken, so I asked my local ice retailer about a new head unit. I was told that there are no new sony head units that have control capability for the cd changers. is there any alternative or are cd changers a thing of the past ?

Manufacturers are tending to follow the consumer move towards iPod/MP3/USB music storage and so yes, we'll probably see less of the CD Changer compatible units. Even so, I'm surprised there's nothing in the new Sony range, since you can still buy Sony CD Changers.

Would be worth searching for an older Sony model (I bet a few dealers are sitting on stock) or getting an estimate on having yours repaired. Then again, if you're thinking of changing your car, you may find an interface that could allow you to use your CD Changer with the vehicle's factory head unit.

With regard to ipod etc, can you notice much difference in sound quality.

The sound quality question isn't easy to answer, as there are several variables. One is the quality of the rest of your hi-fi system (amp and speakers) - obviously the better the system, the more likely you'd hear a difference if you were able to compare CD to MP3 side-by-side.

The other variable is you - if you have been listening to a good system, generally have a 'good ear', like to listen to live unamplified music (piano, acoustic instruments, jazz, blues, folk), then yes, you'd definitely notice a significant difference. MP3 and other compressed file formats let go of musical detail considered to be not essential. On a moderate system, or through average earphones, you might struggle to notice the difference, and for most portable purposes it's just fine - but listening in a quiet car, on a good system, can reveal a hell of a lot about the quality of the source.

I didn't grow up on MP3 though... that's also a factor

i am having a new car (Celica) and I already have some old gear. I have a rear shelf with 2 6x9 infinity kappa's and an infinity 10 inch sub. I also have a pheonix gold m25 amp (2 channel)and of course the 2 sony changers. I was planning on replacing the front door speakers and I have been recommended some 6 inch boston's. I need a new head unit to operate the changers and maybe I need another amp? any recommendations or ideas are welcome.

Sounds like a nice 'old skool' system you have there. As for recommendations, I'd better stay impartial and leave that to the experts... but I did always like the old Boston Acoustics speakers
